If you’re looking to improve your immune system, your gut could play an important role. About 70% of your immune system resides in the gut. A well-balanced microbiota plays a major role in driving off harmful substances, including viruses and bacteria, and allowing your immune system to function properly. Here's a quick guide to using the Shido App to help support both your gut and immune health:

Nutrition tracking

While a well-balanced diet is key to overall health, there are specific elements you can include in your diet to help support your gut/immune health. Using our health tracker to ensure adequate intake of:

  • Vitamin B6 & B9
  • Vitamins C & D
  • Iron
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Fibre
  • Protein

will help to ensure your body is primed to support your gut/immune health. To further support this, make sure to keep track of your sugar and alcohol intake and that they are both kept to a minimum.

Just track your day’s food in the Log Food & Activities section of the app and at the end of the day go to the Nutriscore section and make sure you are hitting your target on the gut/immune-boosting nutrients you need.

Sleep

Our sleep—including its quality and duration—can significantly influence our gut and immune health. Several studies have confirmed that the intestinal microbiome is impacted by our sleep. Even more importantly, poor sleep quality can actually lead to a whole host of health problems, many of which originate in the gut.

Head to the Log Food & Activities section to set yourself a sleep goal and make sure to hit your goal as regularly as possible.

Not sure what to cook to help support your gut/immune health? We have a 7-day immune-boosting meal plan that will fill your week with the right micro/macro balance of gut-nourishing nutrients. Research shows that exercise benefits the gut by helping to increase the number of different types of bacteria. Other research suggests moderate endurance exercise can improve gut health regardless of other influential factors, such as eating habits. In short, exercise can help to promote healthy bacteria in the gut, which may help reduce inflammation and support immune function.

The Shido app is here to support you on your movement journey. Head over to the Fitness area and select a workout to get you moving. You can choose from exercise forms such as:

In times of stress, opting for low-impact exercises such as yoga, pilates or walking is advisable.
